Pusha T Discusses Clipse’s Collaboration with Kendrick Lamar

Pusha T gives an inside look into Clipse’s collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, marking a significant moment for the hip-hop duo.

  • A chance encounter with Kendrick’s crew led to the iconic collaboration on Clipse’s album “Let God Sort Em Out.”
  • Kendrick Lamar’s involvement in the album was a spontaneous decision, fueled by the synergy of the moment.
  • Kendrick’s verse on “Chains & Whips” stirred controversy and led to Clipse parting ways with Def Jam.
  • The duo paid a hefty sum to maintain their creative integrity by exiting their contract.

Pusha T shared details on how the Virginia-based duo, Clipse, secured a feature from Kendrick Lamar for their latest album, “Let God Sort Em Out.” It all began with a casual studio visit from a member of Kendrick’s team as people flowed in and out of the studio, Pusha explained.

Once Kendrick’s team heard the album, they rushed to get Kendrick involved. “He was busy,” Pusha noted, but enthusiasm was infectious, leading Kendrick to contribute not one, but two tracks, including the provocative “Chains & Whips.”

However, Kendrick’s verse sparked disputes with Def Jam. The label desired censorship, but Pusha was steadfast, refusing to alter Kendrick’s work or pull the song despite the pressure.

Negotiations with Def Jam soured further due to the album’s sensitive timing, coinciding with a legal battle involving Kendrick’s collaborator, Drake. These complexities led Clipse to buy out of their contract, paying a significant fee for freedom.

Their manager recounted the ordeal, describing it as an extensive and costly measure to preserve the album’s original spirit. It was a monumental amount, reflecting their commitment to artistic independence.

Pusha T and Clipse championed artistic freedom in their collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, despite significant challenges.
