Cam’ron Reflects on ‘I Really Mean It’: A Hit Born from Rejection

Cam’ron recently shared a surprising backstory about one of his biggest hits, “I Really Mean It.”

During an episode of his sports talk show, Cam’ron revealed that the track was initially penned for Lil’ Kim. He explained, “I did write a song for Lil’ Kim and she didn’t want it, and the lyrics changed and I ended up keeping it for myself.”

Reflecting on the decision, Cam’ron expressed gratitude for the rejection. “It was one of my biggest records… she didn’t like it. That’s one of the best things, cause thats one of my close-out songs,” he stated, happily noting that the song became significant in his career.

Cam’ron also mentioned his involvement with 3LW’s hit “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right).” He claimed, “I wrote for 3 Little Women. The single, I’m in the credits, I wrote that. ‘Promises, promises’? That’s me. I penned that joint. We’re real creative, just tap in, man.”

Meanwhile, former Dipset member Jim Jones added fuel to their ongoing feud. He asserted on Way Up with Angela Yee that his influence was present on “every” Cam’ron album. “I helped him write every one of his albums… I done near write all his music,” declared Jones.

Despite the claims from Jones, Cam’ron chose not to publicly engage. He previously stated an intention to refrain from responding to such public confrontations with Jones. Their rocky relationship has been highlighted by diss tracks and social media clashes.

In a twist to the tale, Cam’ron claimed fellow artist Ma$e taught Jones how to rap, underscoring the mentorship network in hip-hop. “We taught you how to rap, n-gga,” Cam’ron alleged, suggesting that Jones’s rise was supported by others.

Cam’ron’s journey with ‘I Really Mean It’ is a testament to how a setback can turn into success. His revelations about other artists open up more stories about the complex world of collaborations and rivalries in hip-hop.
