In a surprising twist, West Coast legend Xzibit has uncovered the unexpected story behind DMX’s chart-topping hit “Party Up.”
According to Xzibit, this booming anthem was more than just a party song – it was a lyrical shot fired at Kurupt, a member of Tha Dogg Pound. The revelation came in an interview with Effective Immediately, where Xzibit explained how DMX crafted ‘Party Up’ as a retort to Kurupt’s diss track ‘Callin Out Names.’
Xzibit shared, “I think what was crazy was when I found out that ‘Party Up’ was the answer to ‘Callin Out Names’.” He added, “Your girl’s a hoe / You’re broke, the kid ain’t yours, and e’rybody know,’ was DMX’s direct response.”
The tension between DMX and Kurupt allegedly stemmed from conflicts over rapper Foxy Brown. Xzibit highlighted that their feud wasn’t just about music, but personal issues, quipping that it could all be part of a ‘Hip Hop 101’ lesson in rap history.
Kurupt himself addressed his motivation for dissing DMX in ‘Callin Out Names’, revealing to HipHopDX that his personal connections were deeply entwined. He specifically noted his previous engagement to Foxy Brown, whose relationship with DMX fueled the fire.
Reflecting on the song’s origin, Kurupt expressed regret over the situation. “I was in my feelings, and I was really upset at the whole experience with this young lady,” he confessed. The emotional turmoil led to raw and candid music.
However, as tempers cooled, Kurupt later confirmed that he and DMX had reconciled. Meeting by chance at an airport, they had a chance to patch things up and forge a friendship. “It’s all learning experiences,” Kurupt acknowledged, “Right now, me and Earl are very good, cool friends.”
Ultimately, this saga of rivalry and reconciliation highlights the intense drama that fuels much of hip-hop’s narrative. Despite their past differences, DMX and Kurupt’s story ended on a note of mutual respect and understanding.
